The first half of 2009 I was still working my tail off at Steak-N-Shake and Publix. It was good for me. I was still riding my bike everyday, a Cannondale Adventure 3 with UT colors. In the summer I bought a little Nissan truck.

My Delicious Breakfast of ham and eggs from Crabby Bill's and my delicious dinner cooked by me, the steak and vegetables are compliments of Olimpica Market in Lutz, Florida that has specialty foods from Columbia and Central America, fresh produce and meats from local farmers. Yes that is queso blanco in the salad.

My Birthday dinner of beef steak with sauteed mushrooms and red onions, black beans with white cheese, a salad of cucumber, tomatoes, and queso blanco with a herb raita sauce.

These are some of the presents I gave myself including a lovely day at the beach which will be in my next post. I had the best time. The food was great and so was the view.

Hope and I were designing a garden for the balcony when a stray kitten followed us upstairs. Hope asked me: "Aunt Cynthia, can't we feed it something, it looks hungry?" We gave the poor little dear some salmon and when I had a bicycle crash the next week this kitten kept me company, so now I am in love with it and we share our palace.

I got home really late Sunday night and I had gotten an email telling me that Barack Obama would be in Tampa at Legends Field on Monday. I was so excited because it was my day off. I got uo and had a delicious breakfast, then headed out on my bike across town. It was a beautiful day. I took pictures all along the way so I could remember it. The air was crisp, cool and clean. I met so many nice people along the way, but especially at the rally and waiting to go in for early voting at the College Hill Library... I think that was the most fun, it was like a family reunion. I was so pleased to have heard what Barack Obama had to say with my own ears and decide for myself who I wanted to vote for.

Fire Station 14 in Tampa, FL commemorates 9/11 with flag at half staff

It is the seventh anniversary. I am blessed to live right across the street from fire station 14 here in Tampa. The fire fighters have honored the day with the flag at half mast, and spent hours together when not on calls in fellowship. They too would be willing to save us should an emergency arise. I pray for all who died on that day, it was a tragic loss for the world when all those people died, including those who crashed the planes. All of them will be mourned for countless years to come.

I am thankful for my new support network. I face challenges like flat tires and tight budgets as gracefully as possible. I have plans for a productive and peaceful future. I want to go back to school to study business, yeah get an MBA and take all that experience and turn it into something you can be proud of. Tomorrow I am going to go to the art museum and hang out for awhile. Here are some new pics for you and a couple of shots of rain. I am currently watching Breathless Episode 5 on My Soju whenever I can. It is getting more and more complex as time goes on. Like all love stories I suppose it is a constant challenge. I spoke with one of my dearest friends who is trying to evacuate from Houston. We pray for his family's safety. We saw very heavy rain here in Tampa this afternoon. I took a short video yesterday and today, so you can see what it looked like from my apartment. On Tuesday when I was off I had a flat tire so I stopped in at the famous Mel's Hot Dogs and ate lunch. Apparently many famous people have eaten there and then shown their support as they travelled the globe by brandishing bumper stickers and or red t-shirts from Mel's. The food was delicous.

Well I went to look at an apartment today. They want to offer me a larger one-bedroom for just about the same as the cost of the smallest one bedroom. It was clean and nice. There is a huge walk-in closet with built in shelving. The kitchen is small but well organized with plenty of cabinet space. I have no furniture so it really seems big to me now. All I would like to have is one table in the living room, and maybe a small computer desk in my room. That one table can be my everything table - like in Seoul. I will find out next week if it is truly mine.

Well we left on EB bus 33, transferred to SB bus 36 all the way to Britton Plaza in South Tampa. We had a delicious lunch at Pitmasters BBQ. Then we wandered around Big Lots for half an hour or so, even did our nails in the shade while we waited for the 100X Express to take us over the southern most bridge to St. Petersburg. In St. Pete we caught the bus 35 WB and connected with the Beach Trolley. We rode down to Pass-A-Grille, put our feet in the water, had a snack at the Paradise Grill, got wet - the water was perfect, collected a few shells, then ran back to catch the next trolley. We took the trolley back to the mainland and caught the bus 35 EB then took bus 19 north through St. Petersburg, Pinellas Park and just south of the outskirts of Clearwater. It was on this part of the trip that some fellow passengers helped us figure out that we would be better off trying to catch the next to the last or last 300X Express [the middle bridge, that goes to downtown Tampa] because we were not going to make it all the way north in time to catch the very last 200X Express that ends up near the Tampa International Airport. Well it was a great success. We made it to downtown Tampa, took the bus 1 NB to Fletcher, waited at Sweetbay, got some subs and drinks and very creatively was driven the rest of the way by a USF engineering student from North Africa and made it home at 7:30 p.m. Whew! It was a non-stop day, with plenty of giggling and talking. It was so much fun. I laughed so hard I cried.

This is another beautiful love story. The woman is so sweet, very honest, and helpful. The man is handsome, hard working, but is genuinely kind. Oh I love Korean dramas!!!

New Meaning to Day Trips in the Car - How About Day Ride

Well I used to like to go on little day trips when I lived in Austin, like to Fredricksburg or Blanco just to spend the day. Well now I am rediscovering Tampa after a 30 year absence. One nice thing for cycling is it is really very flat here, but biker beware it does not mean that the streets are free from obstacles. I live in the NW corner of Tampa and I rode several miles away to the north central part of town to go to the public pool to swim. I passed many beautiful neighborhoods as I went, as well as interesting shops. The most impressive was a Cuban style rotisserie chicken which was very much like Pollo Regio back home. I hope to stop in there when LeLe comes to visit. I practically had the pool all to myself, because I got there late in the afternoon close to closing time. I swam there as a child, and it seemed so big then, but it was much smaller to me. The water was crystal clear and very clean. It had rained earlier in the afternoon, so the water was a perfect coolness for swimming. After the pool, I headed over to my brother's house where I visited with him, his wife and 3 children. We all practiced "perfect push-ups", then played Bible Trivia while the girls made me beautiful bead bracelets to wear. His son made us his finest Cuban coffee, oh so yummy. I rode home in the dark, cool evening air. It was a memorable day. Oh one thing I forgot to mention was that on the way to his house I saw a nail salon that said "LeLe's Nails" it made me think of LeLe. I miss her so much. I sent her a text message with a picture of that just to be silly.

I had quite an adventure. First I rode bus 36 south west, then bus 39 west to the edge of town. I rode my bike all the way through Westchase, past the horse race track to Oldsmar where I waited for a Pinellas county bus. From there I went from Clearwater to the beaches, from the north to Clearwater Beach to the furthest south at Pass a Grill then back again, only to miss the last bus headed back to the county line so I rode my bike across Tampa Bay on the Courtney Campbell Causeway.

As I rode home the winter air was so cool and crisp. The wind was quiet and smooth. I love this time of year. The moon is silvery white and the sky is the darkest blue, bluer than blue. It is my favorite of all colors. I am at peace. I have set several goals for myself I hope to accomplish in this new year. I will work harder than I have ever worked before in my whole life to reach my goals. It is so worth it and I am determined and motivated to accomplish these things. Daddy and I went to the nearby park at Martha Lake. It was a cool partly cloudy morning, but perfect for a morning stroll. Later in the afternoon we went to the local fruit stand to get watermelon, pineapple and mango for dessert. Yummy! The rhodadendrons were in full bloom as were many other northern wildflowers. We saw a young male mallard duck on the shore. The trees and the flowering plants were simply spectacular. I plan on making a calendar once I get home so I can remember the trip.

Well I made it to Seattle - by way of a 7 hour layover in Denver. I got to watch my first Korean drama in ages - Episode 1 of My Sweetheart in Paris while I was waiting at Gate B25 in Denver with a posse of passengers. I made it to my parents house at around 2:00 a.m. Seattle time. I slept well in cozy tiger blankets. We had bacon, fried rice, orange juice, cinnamon rolls and fresh coffee for breakfast. We went to the Alderidge Mall and went shopping for birthday gifts - then to the Ranch 99 Oriental Supermarket for groceries. We ate lunch at Applebee's. I'll be uploading photos as they become available.

I want to move forward, regain my health, preserve my dignity, claim my true identity, experience clarity, be successful, face the challenges, overcome obstacles, find peace and quiet. Sometimes my head just spins and I just can't quite get it all together. I don't know when that feeling will fade. I hate knowing I have the know how and skill to accomplish what I want to, but be so overwhelmed by competing circumstances - it is difficult to concentrate. Overall I will say that the new home and our "little" family is fun, relaxing and comfortable. I just wish I could spend many days at home recovering from all that has happened. Maybe I should consider taking a break this summer and just take it easy instead of pushing myself into oblivion. I just don't know yet. I want to get ahead, but at what price? I need to think carefully and pray sincerely for a solution to the malaise glaze and balance the budget at the same time. Any ideas?

Sometimes just when you think you finished all your work, here it comes - another assignment. But this hard work is not without it's rewards. The sense of satisfaction knowing your boss let you know that you did a great job is uplifting to say the least. I worked harder on this assignment than any other. I even pulled an all nighter, but it was worth it. In the end everything just fell into place like clockwork, the timing, the way the information was communicated in a series of long meetings was well received. The presentations were visually stunning and conveyed our commitment to excellence. Under strong leadership I feel I am able to be a valued member of this organization. I feel like I have a true mentor in my boss, someone who is there to lead the way and show me just what to do - the way it should be done.

Well, sorry there are not any great pictures today...yet. This should be the first time all week that anyone in Austin has seen the sun, since before the start of the infamous ice storm. I cannot wait. It is 7:00 a.m. and the sun is just peeking over the horizon. The birds in the neighborhood are sounding the call - look the sun! I'll take Alex for a walk in a few minutes. I'm sorry that I have not lived up to my blogs namesake for a while. I just cannot get access to download dramas lately like I usually do. Someday in the near future maybe I can afford my own high speed something, but for now I'll have to wait. I'm still a fan though and come spring I'm back in business again. Wow, last night was the first night that I did wipe down all by myself in time to close at closing time! Pretty cool. Not only that Raymond and I each earned six dollars in tips. I know that may not sound like much, but honey its a whole lot when you are counting pennies. I was so happy to find gas at Leo's in East Austin for $ 2.05 a gallon, super service, nice family and great prices, you cannot go wrong there. I'll definitely be going back there again. I had forgotten that there is a City Market grocery store right near there too. Maybe I can plan ahead and kill two birds with one stone so to speak. The guys at work are so funny. Most of them I am old enough to be their mom. They make me laugh. It is like a family, they keep my spirits up even when it is tough. We had several rushes. Everyone helps each other out, no matter what. It is so different from other businesses where each employee is just out for themselves. At Dan's the teamwork is what makes the business run smoothly. It is fun to go to work. You know that no matter how tough it is, at the end of the night we got it done, and we're going home. You have got to come by and have a burger, a shake or man those onion rings. You will like it. Everything is homemade. Good stuff.

This year we made lots of memories, with our family. We stayed up late watching movies about compassion for your fellow human being. We got to visit with our family in San Antonio. We visited with my sister, her husband and two boys. The boys were so thrilled with the construction set that Santa brought they forgot all about the electronic toys they got - and just began to build together. It was precious. I gave the doggies in San Antonio each a Scooby snack and lots of love. It had been raining really heavy all night Christmas Eve and was still cool Christmas morning. We spent the night at my brothers and went out to eat at an awesome Chinese restaurant for dinner. The seafood was to die for and the service was great. My brother is going to be moving to the South Pacific soon, so he gave LeLe the gift of a lifetime, a precious red tabby named Kitty. She fell in love with that cat and could not wait to bring him home. We just lost Ruby last week, so it was really nice to be able to have a house full of pets again. It is great to have Alex as a companion, she is such a great doggie, so sweet and so good. Mitten is very loyal and has been sleeping in my room each night this week. I imagine our new little orange lion will be lounging around in LeLe's girl's palace on the sofa listening to music. I just watched the Cowboys and the Eagles game...Philadelphia won, they played very well. After the game was over I was looking for something cheerful and I luckily I got to see a really cool episode of Everybody Hates Chris on CW. It is such a great show. I am so happy that there is a show like this, like regular people, on TV, I really enjoyed it. Later tonight I'd like to go see the lights on 37th Street - I've been wanting to go for weeks but just have been so busy. I have all that I have wished for, a day to be thankful for the gift of forgiveness that Christmas brought the world, thankfulness for a beautiful day today, a great time with my daughter and my family, loving pets and the memory of an absolutely beautiful day today. It is just like a mirror of my life, after the wind died down and the storm cleared there was a beautiful day waiting just on the horizon. I cannot wait for 2007, it is only a week away!

Ruby Pooby's life has come to an abrupt end

On Thursday, December 21, 2006 my beloved but determined doggie, Ruby died doing what she loved to do most, escape and run around the neighborhood. She squeezed through a small crack between the fence post and the edge of the house. She first ran to our neighbor's garage, rummaged around to discover some creature, then bolted for the front of the house. She was headed around the block, but must have seen something across the street at Reilly Elementary that caught her eye. Sometimes cats hang out near the bushes in the front of the school at night. Our neighbors west of us were just coming home from the grocery store when they discovered that Ruby had been hit by a car. The gentleman went to get a flash light to see if Ruby was okay or not. He came and told us that Ruby had been hit by a car and did not make it. We wrapped her in a beautiful blue spiral towel, and laid her to rest. Alex was sad. I feel so sad for what has happened. Ruby was always determined to find a means to escape and go on an adventure, only this time it was her undoing, as it was a means to the end.

There is absolutely no looking back. I am going to take the GRE. I am going to go back to school, the same year Lesley does. I am going to work this summer and get ahead. I need to renew my spirit, create art, live and love living. I need to be me. I will revel in my freedom, and celebrate my independence because there is nothing worth mourning over in the past, that is for damn sure. Anything worth having is already here, and whatever else is only good fortune. The past is permanently closed ... for remodeling. The present is cleansing and growing, and the future is mine!

Nausea vs Nurture

You may well know that I have been suffering from nausea due to stress from being given some really crappy news. Here is what I found that can describe the way I feel when I have to be in the presence of the bearer's of the bad news: nauseate - bother, disturb, make sick, offend, reluct, repel, repulse, revolt, sicken. That just about covers it.

On the other hand when I am in the presence of people who love and care for me - and all together have a different capacity for compassion and acceptance here is what I feel like when I am with them: affection, allegiance, appreciation, cherishing, delight, devotion, enjoyment, fidelity, fondness, friendship, regard, respect, tenderness.

This makes it very clear. I will do anything and everything to stay away from people who make me feel nausea, and surround myself with people who make me feel healthy and whole.

Moving on Saturday

I'm moving to the new house on Saturday afternoon. Last night I got in late and just headed over there. It was so quiet and peaceful. I ended up sleeping on the floor, but I slept like I hadn't slept in years. I think on Saturday I'm just going to place the boxes off to one side, make the bed and then sleep, sleep, sleep all weekend. No phones, no nothing, just peace, quiet and resting. I'm so tired now, but I just can't rest. I've started studying meditation to help me through this difficult time. I was reunited with some old Soka Gakkai friends here in Austin. My qi is depleted, I must do everything I can to replenish my qi. I did not realize just unhealthy all this had become until I spent on night away from the chaos and the pain. It is going to take some time to recover from the hurt and neglect. I feel certain that a healthy life awaits. I cannot wait to ride my bike along Town Lake, or take the dogs for a walk on Shoal Creek, or go play the piano at the Union with LeLe. We just need to be with our family and our friends period. No turning back, just forge on to what lies ahead.

Challenges...I want to meet them. My energy level is not as high as it usually is. Starting the year out ill took its toll, now I'm playing catch up. Free time is a luxury. The desire and the inspiration still comes, but the time and having the reserve to create is what is missing. I feel like if I had more energy I could work faster. If I could work faster, I'd get done so that I could actually have some free time to spend with family or friends. There must be a reason for all this. I just have to get past this difficult bump in the road. I missed watching Korean drama so much that I watched the first half of My Sassy Girl with Barry on Sunday night. Oh to hear Hangul again, so nice. Aigoo!

Jean, LeLe, Marian and Nefertari went to see the game together. We played at House Park against our long time rivals the Anderson High School Trojans. I brought the Hawaiian Tiki for Kiki that we carried all the way to Regionals last year for good luck. I got to say hi to Kiki just as the game started, and I said hello to Sierra, Chris's sister and Chris. The band rocked. It was funny though, you could tell that Anderson's football team had younger players, but we had a lot of seniors, and it was just the opposite with the bands, the Trojan band had many returning players, while we had some young ones out there --- trying to keep up with the seniors. It was a great game. Afterwards we all went to McDonald's to get shakes, on the way we drove by TACO SHACK and cheered! GO FIGHT WIN MAC Knights!

Well Kim and I are starting on week 3 of the first six weeks with our freshman & sophomore class. Teenagers will keep you young. I can not believe it but I have asthma, a severe allergic reaction to dust/mold. I wondered why my laryngitis never cleared up, who knew. I thought that I must really be under the weather. My lung capacity was down to around 300 cc. I'm starting to respond to treatment though, thank goodness, I need to be as energetic as possible at home and at school. I took communion at home today as I was feeling a little woozy this morning, but now I feel much better. Kim and I both worked on getting the tasks for pre-vocational training ready for the week. I stayed and worked on some communication boards, and finished out 5th, 6th and 7th period criteria charts and rubrics. In our class there are as many as four subjects being taught simultaneously so it can get pretty busy. I can't wait to watch a new drama sometime soon...maybe after there is some cooler weather. It's too bad that Hurricane Ernesto did not send some friendly rain showers our way. It has been so hot and dry here in Austin for so long, the grass in the front yard looks like an old broom. Poor little plants. Well I've got to go to bed - up and at 'em. We've got our first pep rally on Friday so we'll be practicing our go fight win cheer all week. Maybe we'll win the spirit stick.

LeLe and Marian had fun feeding red grapes to the sea gulls, swimming and then playing in the sand at the beach this past Tuesday morning. We were at the tip of the island of St. Pete Beach between the Don Cesar Resort and Pass A Grille at the southernmost tip of islands along the Gulf Coast of Tampa Bay. We at at Pujano's Italian Restaurant that has been in the area since 1971. What fun! We'll post more pictures as we go.

Last Week of Summer School - Watching JDorama & Korean Dramas Lately too!

It is the last week of summer school at Austin High School. My students have done very well, especially in cooking and in math this session. All of my guys are studying hard in communication this summer, and making good grades. Tomorrow we will go on a field trip in the afternoon to Deep Eddy Pool. It should be fun.
Barry & I recently watched a Korean movie called MARATHON about a young athelete in Korea who just happened to have autism. My friend from Hangul 1 class loaned to us over the summer while she was visiting Korea. It is a powerful story of self-determination and finding one' niche in the world. I highly recommend it.
Right now we are watching the 1993 Japanese drama DOUBLE KITCHENS about a young married couple who live with the groom's family in an adjacent town home, hence the name double kitchen. His parents are very traditional. There are still two sisters living at home when the drama begins, but slowly they grow up, marry and seek jobs or start a family of their own. The young couple are busy with work and learning how to navigate newlywed life with all the formalities of family matters and tradition. It is cute and funny.

Well, what'ta'ya know...things finally did change. It did not happen on my timeline. It was divine intervention. All the many years led up to a miraculous Friday at school. I understood why I had gone through so many challenges...it was all preparing me for God's work I need to be ready to do. Sometimes you have to look carefully to listen. You've probably heard of "not seeing the forest for the trees" haven't you? Imagine trying to understand someone who quietly communicates, but it was hard for others to understand. Why this week we could make the connection, and see that they were reaching out all along is nothing short of a miracle. You know it is grace given when you know that you have not done anything to deserve such a blessing as special as this...it makes you feel thankful to be alive, it makes you feel happy. I am so looking forward to the challenges that are ahead of me. I want to face it. I want to grow. I know that my students are going to teach me so much more than I've ever expected. College was great, training is always helpful, but it is life's greatest challenges that really prepare you for what needs to be done. I was amazed that one of my students has been so patient for me to finally get what he has been trying to say all along. He just laughed at me like "now you get it"! What a joy. I am thankful for all these things. Even though I do not know what may happen, I have faith that it is going to be as it should be.

This is a picture of me and my teacher SunSengNim Lyu from our awards ceremony commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the Austin Korean School. I am a Hangul 1 student. This was such an important day for all of us. I used to teach 6th grade at Webb Middle School, where the Austin Korean School campus is located on Saturdays. I had wanted to learn how to read and write in Hangul for a long time. My teacher helped me to do this.
I hope that one day Hangul will be available in public schools.

Tonight LeLe and I drove up to north Austin, to Fry's Electronics. We were looking for a MP3 player. Whew luckily they had one on a ladder, like divine intervention, then we zipped up to the register, checked out and then it was literally...LIGHTS OUT. Someone must have hit a transformer or something in the neighborhood. The whole store was in pitch black darkness. I'll never forget that. Poor LeLe is having to read an assigned novel in English that is a bit of a dry read, but required reading no less. I thought it might be easier to listen to it so we downloaded, clear and cool and must faster than reading at your own pace. A typical novel takes 3-4 hours when read by a narrator, this one even has sound effects. She says it makes it sound like a old time radio program. We had fun. It was a bit of an adventure.

Somethings happened this week that helped me to see how I am more like my students with Autism and Asperger's than different. I realized that my greatest joy comes from spending time with the kids. I enjoy my co-workers so much, and we do a lot to solve problems and help teachers and kids. We tag team cases all the time. But sometimes when we are all together as a group, especially if I enter into a meeting or discussion that is already in progress, I end up being a "just me". For those of you who don't know what being a just me is visit Michelle Garcia-Winner's website, www.socialthinking.com, and you will soon learn all you ever wanted to know. Well I can say one thing, I think it is great that God gave me something that helps me understand my students better. I just hope that I can develop the other things I need to be part of a working group, and a friend to my office mates, something I've always wanted to be.

I had the most memorable and fun trip to Florida. I flew there with my brother Randy. We stayed with my parents. While we were there we got to visit with our little brother Rick, his wife and children. The weather was great. We hung out at home, went out to eat at the Cheesecake Factory, IHOP which we renamed I Hope. We rode to the shore of the bay. We visited the Do-Jang where our family practices Tae Kwon Do. We smelled orange blossoms that smelled like heaven, ate tons of tangerines off the trees, got licked by a black puppy and yes we drove everywhere in a PT Cruiser Convertible - the poor man's Toyota MR 2 Spider! Time Off

I'm taking the day off, only this time I really mean it. Last week I was running errands after being sick with a cold, so I mostly just needed to rest. Today I'm going to enjoy myself and loaf just a bit. I'm going out to lunch later. Right now I'm just contemplating how I will make it through to the end of the school year. Man it has been so busy, the year is just flying by. Next year will definitely be different. I'd like next year to be better, more organized and less stressful than this school year has been. Thank goodness for acupuncture, otherwise I might not have made it through so well. All I know is that something is going to change, and I'm ready for things to change.
